Dear students:As you embark on your studies in China, safety extends beyond daily travel to the protection of life and property. With summer just around the corner, fire and drowning are two common and highly dangerous emergencies. Understanding and mastering basic prevention and emergency response skills is crucial to ensuring your own safety and that of others. The following warm reminders cover both fire safety and water activity safety. Please read them carefully and follow them to help create a safe and harmonious campus environment.
Fire Prevention and Response
In your daily study and life, to minimize fire risks, please do not smoke or use open flames indoors—such as in dormitories, academic buildings, or libraries; do not run unauthorized wiring, modify electrical appliances, or overload sockets; always switch off power when leaving a room; never leave cooking unattended in the kitchen, and keep flammable or explosive materials at a safe distance; storing flammable, explosive, or chemical hazards—such as gasoline, alcohol, or pressurized gas cylinders—in dormitories is strictly forbidden.
If you discover a fire, immediately press the nearest fire alarm button to activate the building’s fire response system. Then call “119” and clearly report the exact address, the location of the fire, and whether anyone is trapped. If conditions permit and your personal safety is not at risk, you may attempt to extinguish a small fire with a fire extinguisher, but evacuate promptly afterward. In an emergency, never use elevators—evacuate quickly and in an orderly fashion via stairwells to the designated assembly point. If you encounter heavy smoke, stay low to the ground and cover your mouth and nose with a wet towel.
Mastering the use of a fire extinguisher is a fundamental skill in fire response. Campus extinguishers are usually dry powder or CO₂ types. Please familiarize yourself with the four-step "Lift -Pull -Grip -Press" procedure: Lift the extinguisher vertically; Pull out the safety pin; Grip the black hose nozzle firmly; Press the handle to discharge. Aim at the base of the flames and sweep side to side, keeping a distance of about 1–2 m from the fire. Avoid directing the discharge at people or very hot surfaces. After use, return the extinguisher to its bracket and notify the relevant department to refill or replace it.
Summer Water Activities Safety
With summer approaching, water-based activities have become a popular way to beat the heat. However, there are also safety hazards to be aware of during summer water activities.
When swimming, you should choose a regulated venue with lifeguards on duty and must not enter the water alone; before entering, familiarize yourself with the water depth, temperature, and underwater terrain. Inexperienced swimmers must wear life jackets or flotation devices; warm up properly before swimming and avoid entering the water on an empty or overly full stomach. Swimming or fishing in outdoor natural waters where currents are strong, underwater obstacles exist, or water quality is unclear is strictly prohibited.
When engaging in outdoor water activities, you should closely monitor weather changes and, in the event of thunderstorms or other severe weather, immediately get out of the water and move away from the shoreline; Always travel in groups, never enter the water or stay by the water's edge alone; ensure someone is always watching and ready to assist; you may carry emergency tools such as a mobile phone or rescue whistle to call for help promptly. If you discover someone drowning outdoors, please immediately shout to alert those around you and call “120” for assistance, do not rashly jump into deep water; ensuring your own safety, you may attempt a rescue using a life ring, a long pole, or similar equipment.
